UPSC exam dates: the annual calendar explained
UPSC publishes an Annual Calendar covering the dates for all six exams - CSE, CDS, NDA, CAPF AC, ESE and CMS - in a single document. CSE is the anchor: CSE 2027 Prelims is indicatively in late May 2027, Mains around September 2027 (5 days), Personality Test January-March 2028. NDA happens twice a year (April + September), CDS three times (Feb, August, November), with CAPF / ESE / CMS slotted around them.

The single-attempt-per-year Civil Services cycle means a missed Prelims costs a whole year. The ~3-month Prelims-to-Mains gap also means strong candidates must prepare Mains in parallel - you cannot start Mains prep only after clearing Prelims. Plan backward from the Prelims date.
- 12+ months out: build the static base (Polity, History, Geography, Economy) and start newspaper reading.
- 6 months out: full syllabus coverage + begin full-length Prelims mocks; draft the optional.
- 2-3 months out: mock-intensive phase, current-affairs consolidation, CSAT safety.
CSE 2027 - full cycle calendar (month by month)
With Prelims 2026 already done on 24 May 2026, attention turns to the next cycle. The dates below are indicative - based on UPSC's typical Annual Calendar rhythm - and must be confirmed against the official notification when it drops.
| Stage | Indicative window | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Notification + form opens | ~mid-February 2027 | Read notification; verify eligibility; begin OTR top-up |
| Application deadline | ~early-March 2027 | Submit form; lock centre choice early |
| e-Admit card | ~early-May 2027 | Download; cross-check details; plan exam-day logistics |
| Prelims | ~late May 2027 | GS Paper I + CSAT, single Sunday |
| Prelims result | ~mid-July 2027 | If cleared, register for Mains (DAF-I) immediately |
| Mains application (DAF-I) | ~late July 2027 | Optional, language papers, photo, signature |
| Mains (9 papers) | ~September 2027 | Descriptive, 5 consecutive days |
| Mains result | ~December 2027 | If cleared, fill DAF-II (service preference, cadre) |
| Personality Test / Interview | ~January-March 2028 | Dhaulpur House, New Delhi; 275 marks |
| Final result | ~April 2028 | Cadre and service allocation; reserve list |
The window from notification to final result is roughly 14 months. That is the minimum runway any serious aspirant should plan against - and most who clear it have invested 18-24 months across one or two cycles.
CDS and NDA cycles in 2027
UPSC runs CDS three times and NDA twice in a calendar year. Aspirants who write CSE often pencil one of these as a parallel option using the same GS / current affairs base. The 2027 windows look roughly like this.
| Exam | Notification | Written exam |
|---|---|---|
| NDA & NA (I) | ~December 2026 | ~April 2027 |
| NDA & NA (II) | ~May 2027 | ~September 2027 |
| CDS (I) | ~December 2026 | ~February 2027 |
| CDS (II) | ~April 2027 | ~August 2027 |
| CDS (III) | ~July 2027 | ~November 2027 |
| CAPF (AC) | ~April 2027 | ~August 2027 |
| ESE Prelims | ~September 2026 | ~February 2027 |
| CMS | ~April 2027 | ~July 2027 |
Reading the calendar like a planner
The Annual Calendar is more than a date sheet - it is a constraint system. Three ideas to keep in mind once you have it in front of you.
- Backward planning beats forward planning. Anchor on the Prelims date, count back 12-16 weeks for a peak-mock phase, then 8-12 weeks before that for the full-coverage phase. Everything earlier is base building.
- Mains and Prelims are not sequential. The ~3-month gap between Prelims (late May) and Mains (September) is too short to learn the Optional from scratch. Build Optional + answer writing through the year; switch fully to Prelims revision in the final 6-8 weeks.
- Notification day is a hard deadline for honesty. Re-check eligibility, attempts used, category proof, photo specs and OTR data on the day the notification drops. Mistakes flagged after submission can cost an attempt.
